marlene mountain
one-line haiku sequence
1974

a japanese connection

rice planting over   the empty fields
the wind chime seller watches the sky for a breeze
late evening   geisha scratches her wig line
a note from the koto hangs in the mist

sumi-e master   in three lines   a lemon
poet's home: moon on the worn tatami
okusan appears   disappears   tomatoes
married islands of the inland sea  tonight

taifu--tatamis leaning against a house
knees popped   how to pray   to buddha
dock floats away matsuyama behind it
old wind chime  its paper left behind in japan

Cicada 3:1 1979
