marlene mountain
one-line haiku sequence
november 7-9 1983

unfinished painting

unfinished painting against the wall
mountain surrounds my silence
tonight not fighting the mood that looms up
the second gin larger
almost a wiggle to the country outlaw song
a community of one
stay or pull up stakes and search
such a habit to be without

don't stew

don't stew you say about the unchangeable
why is it artists destroy themselves
or is it women whose memories go back too far
at peace beside me the light back on
i am as if you'd already left
a longing to nudge and to rattle on
you would listen even to it coming out crosswise
i move closer to your breathing
